The grave of Yosyp Gladkyi

Yosyp Gladkyi (approx. 1789-1866) was the last Koshovyi Otaman of the Zadunaiska Sich, the Nakaznyi Otaman of the Azov Cossack Host, and a Major General.

For his courage and bravery during the siege of the Isakcha fortress, Y. Gladkyi was awarded the Golden Order of St. George and the rank of colonel. At that time, Y. Gladkyi was appointed as the Nakaznyi Otaman of the Separate Zaporozhian Host. In 1829, he was granted a noble title and coat of arms.

Gladkyi held the position of Nakaznyi Otaman of the Azov Cossack Host from 1832 to 1851. In 1851, he retired and moved to the Novospasivska stanitsa, and then to Oleksandrivsk, where he died in 1866.

He was buried initially at the Pylypivskyi cemetery, which was located near the Oleksandrivska Women's Gymnasium. Later, the grave was moved to the territory of the Zaporizhzhia National University. In 1967, a plaque made of pink granite was installed on the grave, and in 1992, a reconstruction of the tombstone with a granite cross and inscription was carried out. The architect of the updated tombstone was V. Lahutenko.
