The Scythian sanctuary

Запоріжжя, о. Хортиця, у лісовій зоні поблизу табору "Чайка"

Sanctuary of the Scythian period is a stone structure located in a pine forest near the Black Rock (Chorna Skelya) and dates back to the 5th-4th centuries BC. A landmark that can easily lead to the sanctuary is the fence that surrounds the "Chaika" camp from the northwest.

The construction has the shape of a ring with a slight convexity. It consists mainly of small and medium-sized stones (up to half a meter).

In the central part, the outline of an oval burial was found. In the western part, three vertically arranged granite blocks were discovered, apparently brought there after looting. At the time of burial, this stone was on top, above the grave. The depth of the burial pit is 1.5 meters.

Clearing revealed the burial of a person who was 1.7 meters tall and lying on their back. The robbers destroyed the upper part of the poorly preserved skeleton. The structure can be dated only by a few fragments of ancient ceramics found among the stones above the burial.
